Water running down the inside of a bedroom window on a cold morning is more than an annoyance. Left alone, it can damage paintwork, swell timber sills and create the damp conditions mould needs to grow. Knowing how to reduce window condensation starts with understanding where the moisture is coming from, then making a few practical changes that suit your home.
Condensation is especially common in Leicestershire homes through autumn and winter, when warm indoor air meets cold glass. It does not automatically mean your windows are poor quality. However, regular heavy condensation can point to a ventilation issue, an uneven heating routine or glazing that is no longer performing as it should.
Why window condensation happens
The air inside your home holds moisture. Everyday living adds more of it: showers, baths, cooking, boiling the kettle, washing clothes and even breathing while you sleep. When this warm, moisture-filled air touches a cold surface, such as the inside pane of a window, it cools quickly and releases water droplets.
The key question is where the condensation appears. Moisture on the room-side surface of the glass means the air inside the property is too humid for the surface temperature. Condensation on the outside of modern double glazing can actually be a sign that the unit is insulating well, as the outer pane is staying cold. Moisture trapped between panes is different again. That usually suggests the sealed unit has failed and may need replacing.
Older single glazing is naturally much colder than modern double glazing, so it is more prone to condensation. Yet even newly fitted energy-efficient windows can mist up if a house is tightly sealed and the moisture has nowhere to escape.
How to reduce window condensation day to day
Start by removing visible moisture each morning. Use a window vac, squeegee or dry microfibre cloth to clear the glass, frame and sill. This will not solve the underlying cause, but it stops standing water soaking into surrounding finishes while you improve ventilation and humidity levels.
Keep internal doors shut when cooking or showering, particularly if colder rooms are nearby. This prevents warm, damp air travelling through the house and settling on bedroom or living-room windows. After a shower, leave the bathroom extractor fan running for long enough to clear the steam. If your fan is noisy, weak or only runs while the light is on, it may not be extracting enough moisture.
In the kitchen, use pan lids and switch on the extractor before steam fills the room. An extractor that only recirculates air through a filter can reduce odours, but an externally vented extractor is generally more effective at removing moisture. Where possible, open a window slightly while cooking, even in colder weather.
Drying laundry indoors is one of the biggest causes of persistent winter condensation. A full load can release a surprising amount of water into the air. Use an outdoor line when the weather allows, or a tumble dryer that vents outside. If indoor drying is unavoidable, place clothes in one well-ventilated room with the door closed, a window slightly open or extractor fan running. A dehumidifier can help in this situation, but it should support good ventilation rather than replace it.
Let moisture out without making the house cold
It is understandable to keep every window firmly closed when energy bills are a concern. The answer is not to leave windows wide open all day. Short, controlled ventilation is usually more effective and far less wasteful.
Open windows for around 10 to 15 minutes after showering, cooking or drying clothes. This allows humid air to leave before it spreads through the house, without cooling walls and furniture for hours. A brief cross-flow of air, created by opening windows on different sides of the property where practical, works particularly well.
If your windows have trickle vents, keep them open unless there is a specific reason not to. These small vents provide background airflow without leaving the window open. They are often closed because of draught concerns, road noise or insects, but permanently shutting them can allow moisture to build up.
Bedrooms deserve attention too. Two people sleeping overnight release moisture into the air, which is why bedroom windows are often wet first thing in the morning. Opening the trickle vents, leaving the bedroom door slightly ajar once you are up, and airing the room for a few minutes can make a noticeable difference.
Keep rooms steadily heated
Cold rooms attract condensation. If one room is rarely heated, warm damp air from the rest of the house can enter and settle on its colder windows, walls and corners. This is a common issue in spare bedrooms, box rooms and conservatories.
A steady, moderate temperature is generally better than allowing the house to become very cold, then heating it intensely for a short time. You do not need to overheat every room, but try to avoid major temperature differences between occupied areas. Keep radiators clear of bulky furniture and long curtains so warm air can circulate properly around the room.
Avoid closing curtains while the glass is already wet. Heavy curtains can trap humid air against the window, making the condensation worse. Wipe the glass first and make sure there is some space between curtains and the sill where possible.
Check whether your windows are contributing
Improving habits and ventilation should be the first step, but inspect the windows as well. Cold draughts around the frame, damaged seals, loose opening sections and worn hinges can lower the surface temperature of the glass and make condensation more likely.
Look closely for black mould around the frame, peeling paint on the sill, water collecting in the bottom of the frame or noticeable draughts when the window is shut. uPVC windows also have drainage channels and small external drainage holes. These must remain clear so rainwater can escape from the frame rather than backing up inside it.
If condensation is between the panes, the insulating seal has likely broken down. You may also see a cloudy or dirty-looking appearance that cannot be cleaned from either side. In some cases, the glass unit can be replaced without changing the whole frame, depending on its condition and style.
When better glazing is the right answer
Well-fitted double glazing with low-emissivity glass and properly sealed frames keeps the inner pane warmer. That reduces the chance of airborne moisture reaching its dew point on the glass. Triple glazing may offer further improvement in some properties, particularly exposed homes or rooms that are difficult to keep warm, but it is not always necessary.
The right choice depends on the condition of your existing frames, the type of property and your budget. Replacing windows solely to cure condensation is not always the answer if the main problem is indoor moisture. On the other hand, ageing single glazing, failed units or badly fitting frames can make a manageable humidity issue much worse.
A professional survey should consider more than the appearance of the window. It should look at the condition of the frames, opening mechanisms, seals, ventilation options and how the room is used. Move large furniture a small distance away from external walls so air can circulate. These problems need checking rather than being treated as ordinary window condensation.
