A clear window can turn cloudy while the kettle boils, after a shower or on the first cold morning of winter. So, why do windows mist up? In most homes, it is condensation: warm, moisture-filled air meeting a colder glass surface. It is common, but where the mist appears makes a real difference to the right solution.
A little condensation on the room-facing side of a window is usually a ventilation and humidity issue. Mist trapped between panes is different. It normally means the sealed glass unit has failed and needs replacing. Knowing which you are dealing with can save money and help protect your home from damp, mould and unnecessary heat loss.
Why do windows mist up on the inside?
Air always contains some water vapour. Cooking, showering, drying clothes indoors, using a tumble dryer that is not vented outside, and even breathing all add moisture to the air. When that warm air touches cold glass, it cools quickly and can no longer hold the same amount of moisture. The excess water settles on the surface as droplets.
Older single glazing is particularly prone to this because the internal pane gets very cold. Well-fitted modern double glazing keeps the inner pane warmer, so it should reduce condensation considerably. It cannot remove the problem entirely, though. If a house has high humidity, limited airflow or a very cold spell outside, even good windows may show some moisture.
You will often notice it first in bedrooms and bathrooms. Bedrooms can mist overnight because windows stay closed while people breathe in a small space for several hours. Bathrooms create a large burst of steam in a short time. Kitchens have the same issue, especially when pans are boiling without an extractor fan or a lid.

The position of the mist tells you more than the amount of it.
Condensation on the room side of the glass
This is the most common type. You can wipe it away with a cloth, and it tends to be worse first thing in the morning, after washing, or when cooking. It points to moisture in the home meeting a cold surface.
It is not always a sign that your windows need replacing. However, regular heavy condensation should not be ignored. Water running down frames can damage timber sills, stain plaster, encourage mould around reveals and make rooms feel cold and unpleasant.
Mist between double-glazed panes
If the cloudiness is inside the sealed unit and cannot be wiped from either side, the perimeter seal has usually broken down. Double-glazed units are sealed around the edge and contain a gap between the panes. That gap helps insulate the home. Once the seal fails, moisture can enter and leave a permanent mist, haze or white marks on the glass.
A failed unit reduces the insulating performance of the window and spoils the view, but it does not always mean the complete frame must be changed. If the uPVC frame is sound, secure and operating properly, a made-to-measure replacement glass unit may be enough. If the frames are also draughty, cracked, faded or difficult to lock, replacing the full window can be better value over the longer term.
Condensation on the outside of the glass
External condensation can look worrying, but it is often a positive sign. It happens when the outside pane stays cold because efficient glazing is keeping warmth inside the home. On a clear, cool morning, moisture in the outdoor air settles on that cold outer surface.
It normally clears as temperatures rise. Unlike mist inside the glass unit, external condensation does not point to a failed seal or a fault with the window.
Why condensation can be worse in winter
Leicestershire homes often see the problem most clearly from late autumn through to spring. Central heating warms the air indoors while outdoor temperatures make window glass colder. We also tend to keep windows shut, dry washing inside and spend more time at home, which all increases moisture levels.
The temptation is to turn the heating down and keep every vent closed to save money. In practice, this can make condensation worse. A home needs a sensible balance of warmth, ventilation and moisture control. Cold rooms and stale air create the conditions in which water settles on glass, walls and other cold surfaces.
Newer, more airtight windows can also reveal an existing ventilation problem. This does not mean modern windows are the cause. It means draughts from old gaps are no longer accidentally ventilating the property. Proper background ventilation, such as trickle vents where fitted, becomes more important.
Practical ways to reduce misting inside your home
Start by reducing moisture at the source. Use the extractor fan while showering and leave it running afterwards if it has a timer. Keep the bathroom door closed during a shower so steam is not released into the rest of the house. In the kitchen, use lids on pans and switch on the extractor whenever you cook.
Open windows for a short period each day, particularly after sleeping, cooking or bathing. You do not need to leave them wide open for hours in cold weather. A brief, purposeful airing can replace damp air without cooling the building fabric too much. If your windows have trickle vents, keep them open unless there is a clear reason not to.
Drying laundry outdoors is best when possible. If you need to use an indoor airer, choose a room with ventilation and close the door. A dehumidifier can be useful in homes where drying clothes inside is unavoidable, but it should support good ventilation rather than replace it.
Keep the home at a reasonably steady temperature. Letting rooms become very cold then heating them quickly can increase surface condensation. Avoid placing large furniture tight against external walls as well, as trapped air can lead to mould behind wardrobes and sofas.
For persistent condensation, a simple humidity meter can be worthwhile. It gives you a clearer picture than guessing. Many homes aim for a relative humidity of around 40% to 60%, although the right level will vary with temperature and how the property is used. If readings remain high despite sensible habits, there may be an issue with extraction, insulation, a leak or an underlying damp problem.
When misted windows need professional attention
Call for advice when the mist is between panes, when condensation is severe every day despite ventilation, or when you can see black mould, peeling paint or water damage around the window. Also look out for draughts, cold patches, rattling panes, failed handles and difficulty locking the window. These can all affect comfort, security and energy bills.
A proper inspection should consider the glass, frame, seals, opening sections and surrounding brickwork rather than simply assuming every problem needs a full replacement. There is a trade-off: replacing only failed glass can be a cost-effective repair, while a complete upgrade may offer stronger security, better insulation and a more consistent finish if the existing windows are reaching the end of their life.
