A steady drip from a gutter may look minor, but the water rarely lands harmlessly. It can soak brickwork, stain render, rot timber fascias and create damp around windows, doors and foundations. Knowing how to repair gutter leaks starts with finding where the water is escaping and, just as importantly, why it has been forced there.
A dry day is usually the best time to inspect the guttering, then use a hose to test the repair afterwards. Do not work from a ladder alone if it is uneven, windy or positioned above a conservatory roof. A small repair is never worth a fall.
Find the source of the gutter leak first
Water often appears to leak from one point while the actual fault sits further up the run. A blockage can make rainwater back up and spill over a joint. A poorly aligned length may hold water until it reaches a low point. Before applying sealant, clear leaves, moss and silt from the gutter and downpipe opening.
Once clean, look closely at the joints, outlet, end caps and corners. These are the most common places for leaks in uPVC guttering. Check for cracked plastic, missing or flattened rubber seals, gaps between sections and brackets that have pulled away from the fascia board.
Then run water through the gutter with a hose, starting at the end furthest from the downpipe. Use a gentle flow at first. This will show whether water is leaking through a joint, overflowing due to a blockage, or sitting in the gutter because the fall is wrong.
How to repair gutter leaks at joints and seals
Most leaking uPVC joints can be fixed without replacing the full gutter run, provided the gutter itself is in sound condition. The key is to avoid sealing over dirt and water, as the repair is unlikely to last through the next spell of heavy rain.
Start by removing the affected gutter section from the union bracket. Wear gloves, as old guttering can contain sharp edges and trapped debris. Clean both the gutter end and the inside of the joint thoroughly, removing grit, algae and old loose sealant. Let the area dry fully.
Inspect the rubber seals inside the union. If they are split, distorted, hard or missing, replace the joint or fit new seals where available. A tired seal is often the real issue, especially on guttering that has been exposed to years of cold winters and summer heat.
If the seals remain in good order but a small gap persists, apply a suitable exterior gutter sealant sparingly to the clean, dry connection. Refit the gutter squarely into the bracket, making sure it sits behind both retaining clips. Too much sealant can prevent the gutter from seating properly and may make future maintenance harder.
Leave the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before testing with water. If it still drips, do not keep adding more sealant. The joint may be warped, the gutter section may be cut too short, or the run may be under strain from poor bracket spacing.
Repairing a crack or small hole
A small crack in plastic guttering can sometimes be patched as a short-term repair. Clean and dry the area, lightly roughen it if required by the repair product, then apply a purpose-made gutter repair tape or exterior sealant patch. Make sure the repair extends beyond the visible crack on all sides.
This approach can buy time, but it is not always the best long-term answer. Plastic becomes brittle with age, and a crack can be a sign that the rest of the section is nearing the end of its useful life. Replacing one damaged length is often a cleaner, more dependable repair.
Metal gutters need a different approach. Small holes may be repaired with a compatible metal patch and sealant, but rusted sections should generally be replaced. Covering corrosion only hides the problem while the metal continues to weaken beneath it.
Check the fall, brackets and downpipe
A gutter must fall gradually towards its downpipe. If water remains standing after a hose test, the gutter is too level or has sagged between brackets. Standing water adds weight, encourages dirt to build up and makes leaks more likely at every joint.
Look along the gutter from ground level where possible. It should not bow noticeably in the middle or rise towards the outlet. Loose, broken or widely spaced brackets may need replacing. On a typical uPVC system, brackets should support the gutter at regular intervals and close to joints, corners and outlets. The correct spacing can vary by system, so it is worth following the manufacturer’s guidance.
A bracket fixed into rotten timber is another warning sign. Tightening the screw may seem to solve the issue, but the gutter will move again if the fascia board cannot hold it securely. In this situation, repair to the roofline may be needed before new guttering can be fixed properly.
Check the downpipe as well. If it is blocked, water can rise at the outlet and overflow from the gutter. Clear accessible debris from the top and bottom, then flush it through. If the blockage is stubborn or underground drainage is backing up, it is sensible to have the system assessed rather than forcing rods through and causing damage.
When cleaning solves the problem
Not every apparent leak needs sealant or replacement. During heavy rain, a gutter that is full of leaves may overflow along its front edge and run down the wall. This is a maintenance issue, not necessarily a failed gutter joint.
For many homes, clearing gutters at least twice a year is a sensible routine – commonly after autumn leaf fall and again in spring. Properties close to trees may need more frequent attention. Also check that the gutter guards, if fitted, are not trapping moss or preventing water from entering freely.
While cleaning, look for signs of repeated overflow: green staining on brickwork, peeling paint on fascias, damp patches below the eaves or washed-out areas near the base of a wall. These clues help identify where water has been escaping even when the weather is dry.
Know when a repair is no longer enough
A single leaking joint is usually straightforward. Repeated leaks across several points are different. They can indicate old guttering, poor installation, failing fascia boards or a roofline that has moved over time.
Replacement is often the more cost-effective option when several sections are cracked, brackets are loose throughout, the gutter profile is badly warped, or water regularly overflows despite cleaning and adjustment.
